Is Your Equipment Ready for Winter?

No matter the month or season, proper vehicle maintenance is always a must. Here’s a quick and simple checklist of items to inspect on your car, truck, or even heavy equipment during the colder months.

1. CHECK WIPER BLADES AND WASHER FLUID

As a rule, wiper blades should be replaced every 6 months to a year. Pay close attention to your wiper’s integrity as the temperature drops. Make sure there is no skipping, streaking, or visible cracks. Also check and replace your windshield washer fluid. If your washer fluid is freezing, use a winter-specific washer fluid that contains a de-icing agent.

2. CHECK TIRE PRESSURE AND TREAD

The only thing that’s worse than having to check your tire pressure or tread wear at the gas station in the cold, is having to replace a tire on the side of the road…in the cold. Keep a pressure gauge and quarters (to pay for air) in your vehicle at all times. It’s a great way to help prevent emergency stops along the way.

3. CHECK BATTERY AND CABLES

Extreme temperatures can have a huge effect on your battery and battery cables. Be sure to check your battery’s charge with a voltmeter or with a quick stop to your local parts service company (most will check for free.)

4. CHANGE OIL AND OIL FILTER

During winter months, it can be easy to let routine oil maintenance slip, especially if you are a do-it-yourselfer. While most modern engines do not require a viscosity change during colder weather, it’s best to ensure you are still performing regular oil changes as specified by your vehicle’s manual.

5. CHECK ANTIFREEZE AND FLUSH AS NECESSARY

Replacing old antifreeze can reduce your chances of clogging or freezing. Check your vehicle’s coolant/antifreeze reservoir to ensure it is full and there no visible debris. If you don’t know what mix was placed in your car, flush it out. And be sure to check your owner’s manual for antifreeze formulas specific to your vehicle.

6. KEEP EMERGENCY ACCESSORIES IN YOUR VEHICLE

Always be prepared for any emergency situations that may arise while you’re on the road. Keep an emergency preparedness kit in your vehicle with some (or preferably all) of the following:

  • First aid kit
  • Jumper cables
  • Rope/tie downs
  • Flares or hazard notification signs
  • Ice scraper
  • Gloves
  • Flashlight
